 Call to Worship  (Clergy Stuff)

 LEADER:     I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord.
ALL:             We will not let our hearts be troubled.
LEADER:     To give you a future with hope.
ALL:             We will not let our hearts be troubled.

Opening Prayer (Clergy Stuff)

All: Consoling God,

Often we find ourselves dissatisfied with where we are in life, questioning our past and our future, unsure whether this is your plan for us. Grant us patience to accept the present, wisdom to discern your will, and courage to carry it out. In all things, help us to trust that you are our guide, and will lead us home. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

*Opening Song Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness  ( TFWS 2120}

Refrain

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

1. You moved on the waters,
you called to the deep,
then you coaxed
up the mountains
from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons
you called to each thing:
wake from your slumbers
and rise on your wings.

Refrain

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

2. You swept through
the desert,
you stung with the sand,
and you goaded your people
with a law and a land;
and when they
were blinded
with their idols and lies,
then you spoke
through your prophets
to open their eyes.

Refrain

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

3. You sang in a stable,
you cried from a hill,
then you whispered
in silence
when the whole
world was still;
and down in the city
you called once again,
when you blew
through your people
on the rush of the wind.

Refrain

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

4. You call from tomorrow,
you break ancient schemes,
from the bondage
of sorrow
the captives dream dreams,
our women see visions,
our men clear their eyes,
with bold new decisions
your people arise.

Refrain

Spirit, Spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness
calling and free;
Spirit, Spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness,
Wind, Wind on the sea.

 Sermon   “Jeremiah’s Letter to Exiles”

 RESPONDING

*Sermon Song   Great Is Thy Faithfulness  (UMH 140)

  1. Great is thy faithfulness,
    O God my Father;
    there is no shadow
    of turning with thee;
    thou changest not,
    thy compassions,
    they fail not;
    as thou hast been,
    thou forever wilt be.

Refrain

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning
new mercies I see;
all I have needed
thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness,
Lord, unto me!

  1. Summer and winter
    and springtime
    and harvest,
    sun, moon, and stars
    in their courses above
    join with all nature in
    manifold witness
    to thy great faithfulness,
    mercy, and love.

Refrain
Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning
new mercies I see;
all I have needed
thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness,
Lord, unto me!

  1. Pardon for sin and a
    peace that endureth,
    thine own dear presence
    to cheer and to guide;
    strength for today
    and bright hope
    for tomorrow,
    blessings all mine,
    with ten thousand beside!

Refrain

Great is thy faithfulness!
Great is thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning
new mercies I see;
all I have needed
thy hand hath provided;
great is thy faithfulness,
Lord, unto me!

Prayers of the People

God of promise, hear our prayer

 The Lord’s Prayer    (spoken)
  All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

Offertory  Craig Nickerson, Organist

 *Offering Response   Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow   (UMH 94)

 *Prayer of Dedication  (Clergy Stuff)

All: Holy God, we come to you with thankful hearts and set before you our gifts of time, money, and skill in gratitude for all that you have given us. Bless these offerings for the life of the world, that all might experience the light of hope. Amen.

 SENDING

 *Closing Song Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus   (UMH 196)

  1. Come, thou
    long-expected Jesus,
    born to set thy people free;
    from our fears and sins release us,
    let us find our rest in thee.
    Israel’s strength and consolation,
    hope of all the earth thou art;
    dear desire of every nation,
    joy of every longing heart.
  1. Born thy people to deliver,
    born a child and yet a King,
    born to reign in us forever,
    now thy gracious
    kingdom bring.
    By thine own eternal spirit
    rule in all our hearts alone;
    by thine all
    sufficient merit,
    raise us to
    thy glorious throne.
