John 2:1-11
Wedding at Cana

In our study of the Wedding at Cana, we explored how John presents the "first sign" of Jesus’s ministry as a moment of overwhelming abundance that saves a family from the devastating legal and social consequences of shame. By turning 150 gallons of water into the finest wine, Jesus reveals that his mission is not just about individual healing, but about the "healing of humanity" and the ushering in of a new age of grace. We are reminded that following Jesus is a call to "abide and go"—to listen deeply to his instructions, just as the servants did, so that we might become vessels of God’s abundant love in a world often focused on scarcity and destruction.

  1. Weekly Reflection Questions:
Where do you see "Grace upon Grace"? The jars at the wedding held an astronomical amount of wine—far more than was necessary. Where in your life this week have you noticed God providing "more than enough," even in small or mundane moments?
  2. Are you listening to the "Marys" in your life? The miracle began because Mary noticed a need and directed others to listen to Jesus. Who are the people in your life who point you toward Christ’s instructions, and are you pausing long enough to truly hear them?
  3. From Ritual to Revelation: The water Jesus transformed was originally for ceremonial washing—the "business end" of religion. Is there a routine or "ritual" part of your faith life that feels dry right now, and how might you invite Jesus to transform that ordinary water into "new wine"?
